HEIVEI is a Norwegian map and travel app that makes it easier to find exciting places along the road. The name HEIVEI means exactly what it sounds like in Norwegian: saying hei (hello) to a business, a place or an experience you find via a vei (road).

In English it might have been called Hello Road, but to us HEIVEI felt more right. A little more Norwegian, a little simpler and a little more direct.

The idea for HEIVEI actually started long before the app was built. It started in the back seat of the car, on road holidays and small road trips with parents who loved driving off to explore.

Raining at home? Then you checked the weather in the morning paper and drove to where the sun might be. Sunny? Then you drove to a place that might have ice cream, good food, a nice beach, a museum or something else worth stopping for.

Some of the best memories came from places no one had planned to visit. Small cafés, local shops, viewpoints, hotels, farm shops, restaurants and experiences you would otherwise have driven straight past.

But there was a problem too.

You never quite knew if the place was open. You did not know what they served. You did not know if the hotel was any good. You did not know if the detour was actually worth it. And sometimes someone had simply said that “it is really nice there”, without mentioning that the café had been closed since 1987.

Many years later, a colleague came up with a simple idea:

«Should there not be an app that shows which places exist along the route?»

That became the start of HEIVEI.

HEIVEI is made for you who are driving from A to Z, but who also want to experience something along the way. In the app you can look up a driving route and find places along it based on what you are actually interested in. That can be restaurants, cafés, hotels, museums, activities, local food, shops, attractions, viewpoints or other experiences along the road.

You decide what you want to see, and how long a detour you are willing to drive to get there.

Because HEIVEI is not just about getting there as fast as possible. It is about making the journey more interesting, more local and more personal.

Instead of just getting one standard route from a big map service, HEIVEI wants to help you find good stops, local businesses and hidden gems along the way. Whether you are planning a road holiday in Norway, a road trip in the Nordics, a weekend trip, a day trip or just a drive somewhere new, HEIVEI should make it easier to discover what is around you.

HEIVEI is built on a simple thought:

The journey is not just the road to the destination.
The journey is also everything you can experience along the way.

We want to develop HEIVEI as a European map and travel app focused on local businesses, honest recommendations and relevant places along the route. Today, some technical components in the solution are owned by American companies, but our goal is for HEIVEI to become a clear European alternative for route planning, travel inspiration and experiences along the road.

The businesses visible in HEIVEI pay a monthly fee to be part of the app. That gives local businesses a new way to be found by people who are already passing by. At the same time, this does not mean users should stop being honest. Quite the opposite.

Honest ratings, feedback and reviews make HEIVEI better for everyone. They help users make good choices, and they help businesses understand what they do well and what they can improve.

For HEIVEI to succeed, the app must be useful for the traveller and valuable for the businesses. Good for you who drive. Good for the places you find. Good for local businesses that deserve more visibility. And good for all the small experiences you might otherwise have driven straight past.
